Its a Faith Journey

2006-10-10 by david

Given the name of our church, “Kelyje,” is seems only natural for me to write about faith being a journey. It seems to me that one reason there is unhappiness about the current state of the church is that the church has lost sight of where it is in its historical perspective.

While the church has existed about 2000 years it is still not perfect; it still has faults. Kelyje is included. Yet for some there seems to be no room for gray. In keeping with the previous generation they church believes it has all of the answers and that the church should continue as it has since its days of glory. For some those days of glory are Azusa Street. For others they are the reformation. For some it is the days of tent crusades and altar calls. For still others it is a big beautiful new building (or old empty one) with a nice hymn and a few generally good words on Sunday.

What we are doing at Kelyje is admittedly different. It is a spiritual journey of faith, an explanation of which is difficult to give. We are trying to do our best to be followers of Jesus and to be his agents, fulfilling his mission on earth.

I know that I don’t have it all figured out, you know, all the answers but we just want to love God and love people.

has anyone seen the big “ads” in bus stops from “new generation” church? the text reads “Jezus yra tas pats vakar, siandien ir per amzius, jau dabar gauk atleidima nuodemems….” and so on. i think its freeking horrible. it gives Jesus and the church a very bad image. its as if they are selling salvation. what do you think?

BK, I would like to know what the “and so on” says in the “advertisment.” The first part of the quote: “Jezus yra tas pats vakar, siandien ir per amzius,…” is a quote from Hebrews 13:8. So, it is hard to say that Scripture could make the church and Jesus look bad. The later part of the quote does sound a bit like they are selling something. The ad itself certainly could do that in terms of how it appears visually and graphically but I haven’t seen it.

I would hope that we could be creative and engaging in our “advertising.” Sometime I think we should think together about how to best represent ourselves in the mass media. This website is basically “advertising.” It may seem that we are trying to sell our church or Jesus to people.

the part i had a problem with was the “JAU DABAR, gauk atleidima nuodemems, pajusk isgydimo jega,” and so on. not the verse. i agree with the verse obviuosly, but the rest is as if they are trying to sell you forgiveness for sins, and healing power. then in says come to our special meeting, and some pastor from ukrain is comming to their church.

Sometimes when a church is trying to “market” themselves or an event there is a temptation to want to do some evangelizing at the same time. I think this is what has happened here. This kind of evangelism is attractional. We are trying to be incarnational in our evangelism, so that is why we have a hard time with it.

hi:) I’ve seen that ad, too. It sounded very shocking to me, but I thought that it’s really amazing that name Jesus speaks to people on such big screens – bus stops:) I don’t remember which letter, but Paul tells that he is happy with whatever testimony, even if someone does it for advertising oneself, or something like this. I don’t like some things in the activities of New Generation church, and when I remember, I am just praying for these people to have wisdom, or for those who come to their events that God would lead them in understading what is right. Maybe I am passive at this point, but I always share my own experiences I had in that church. You always have to check with the Word when you are making some decision, and that shouldn’t be one line, though sometimes it is enough:)

A Community of Transformation

2006-10-10 by david

This blog is designed to facilitate discussion about what happened at our most recent Sunday gathering. Yesterday we talked about how those who follow the Jesus Creed, (the two great commands of Jesus, to “love the Lord your God with all of your heart, with all of your soul, with all of your mind and with all of your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself”) are spiritually formed into a community as they:

* turn to Jesus
* continue to follow Jesus
* and fellowship with those who are trying to live out the Jesus Creed.

We concluded that this creates a community that is a “Community of Transformation.” In other words, we all change by turning to Jesus, following Jesus and fellowshipping with others on the journey.
